When Big Night Live opened in Boston in 2019, Sound Investment Audio designed and integrated the venue’s original Funktion-One sound system. Built to support a demanding calendar of DJs, touring artists, live bands, comedy, spoken word, and other programming, the system established a strong foundation for the venue. As its production needs continued to evolve, Sound Investment returned in 2025 to complete a major system upgrade centered around Funktion-One’s Vero VX.
The move to Vero VX addressed one of the most important requirements for the next generation of the system: consistent full-range coverage throughout the main listening area. The array-based design provides more even distribution across the room, including coverage at the front-of-house mix position. Engineers can now make critical mix decisions from FOH while hearing a representation much closer to what the audience hears throughout the venue.
For Big Night Live, versatility was equally important. The venue can transition from a full live band to a DJ performance, or host everything from electronic music and rock to comedy and spoken word. Vero VX gives the production team a system capable of handling those changes without requiring fundamental processing adjustments between formats. Improved separation and midrange clarity also give engineers greater control when mixing complex live performances, particularly vocals and instrumentation.
The system combines Vero VX with Funktion-One D-Series amplification and processing. High efficiency provides substantial output and headroom without requiring the amplifiers to be pushed excessively to achieve the desired SPL. According to the venue’s production team, that balance of power and clarity remains consistent across operating levels, allowing the system to deliver both high-impact shows and more nuanced program material.
Since the upgrade, engineers at Big Night Live have reported more consistent coverage, greater headroom, improved vocal clarity, and an easier workflow when mixing live bands. Touring engineers, performers, and attendees have also responded to the increased clarity and output of the new system. Once tuned for the room, the system has required relatively little day-to-day adjustment, giving the production team a dependable platform for a wide variety of events.
The 2025 upgrade represents the continued evolution of a venue Sound Investment has supported since its opening. Rather than replacing the original design simply for the sake of new technology, the Vero VX installation responds to how Big Night Live has developed as a live performance venue, expanding the system’s capabilities to better serve the range of artists, engineers, and audiences moving through the room today.
